Found a Miracle
Sadly lost one of our hens last Friday... or so we thought. We searched high and low for a good hour or so It was quite the sight! My hubby, daughter and I wandering around in the dark clucking like chickens with flashlights trying to attract the missing hen and me stopping every couple of minutes to wipe my eyes and blow my nose. I was very sad to have lost one of our babies.
Each day we would keep our eyes and ears open and continue to look in places we thought a frightened little chicken would hide. By the third day it was obvious that she was gone for good. I tried not to think about how terrifying her final moments may have been and prayed that I wouldn't come across her half eaten body somewhere in the woods.
Late Wednesday afternoon my husband Bob was showing off how the chickens follow him around calling himself a 'Chick Magnet'..yes, really! :-) I noticed one of the chickens whom I fondly call Chicken Little was not with the other girls. Instead she sought shelter under a big bush near the side of the house. Curious as to why she was hiding I went to the bush to investigate. There she stood sentry like. Very odd I thought. Looking closer I saw something strange in the branches next to Chicken Little. OMG! It was our missing chicken - upside down with her foot caught between two lower branches of the bush!!!
I called out to my husband and crying ... yes, you could say I'm a little emotionally attached to my hens :-)...I crawled into the bush to retrieve her and give her a proper burial. BUT...... as I got closer it became clear that she was still ALIVE!!! After FIVE days with no food, no water, two thunderstorms, hanging upside down.....this chicken was ALIVE!!!! I couldn't believe it! Her leg definitely looked worse for wear perhaps even broken but she was alive!
I figured if she was able to survive something like that ordeal we were at least going to try to nurse her back to health! I immediately wrapped her in a towel to warm her up, got her to take down some water with 'Save-A-Chick' mixed in....WONDERFUL stuff!!! While my hubby searched the internet for what to do next!!! It's amazing how much great info you can find out there and how caring and helpful everyone in the chicken community is! If everyone in the world cared for one another the way this community cares for its chickens the world would surely be a better place.
The rest of that evening my husband and I took turns cradling the chicken in our arms to keep her warm. By mid-night she was eating a lovely gourmet concoction of mash that Bob made for her and she was drinking on her own.
I am happy to report that this chicken whom we have appropriately named 'Miracle' seems to be on the mend. Today she even hobbled a short distance as our protective bulldog Zoe looked on. We are keeping Miracle in a dog crate in the house until she's ready to rejoin her sister hens.
