Thanks a million, Gary.....
...you just made my muscles and my back scream from memory! I keep trying to tell my husband that a shovel just doesn't fit my hands, but he still sticks one in them and hauls me off to more manure! Truthfully, I love having it, and don't mind shoveling it. Not only do we clean out the chicken coop, but you can often find me in the pastures scooping up mounds of cow manure and tossing it in the compost bin. With winter coming on, we'll do even more of it to toss in the garden so it can have plenty of time to break down for spring planting. I also fill up a couple of five-gallon buckets of the stuff and pour warm water over it. I then cap it off with a lid and let it sit for several days in a sunny spot. Once it has set for a few days, I then drain off the liquid and mix that with some more water and pour that on my potted plants or over the roots of my fruit trees to 'feed them' a little extra. It's commonly called 'manure tea' and the plants love it! I'm so glad I can help you and give you ideas for your columns and your own gardening trials. Now, anytime you need another workout, I just know there's a shovel in the barn that'll fit YOUR hands here! Come on down and I'll put you to work!
