As for your free ranging with a garden, they love fresh tender plants. Probably will not work. Sorry to tell you this. We let ours into the horse pastures to turn over the manure but they will get into my herb gardens as well as everything else we grow. You will have to designate an area for them to get into. How many do you have. I have about 50 which include ducks, geese, and chickens. Good luck
