Pageantry
I've been advised by some not to post more than one blog a week, as it would burn me out. Perhaps that would be the case during Winter, but now the arrival of each new wildflower, weed, and blossom makes an impression upon the observant Countryman and woman. I find that at this time of year I have to take notes on all the wonders I see and file them for future blogs. Here's the best quote I can provide concerning what I've mentioned as the pageantry of Summer:

"Such a rich chapter it had been, when one came to look back on it all! With illustrations so numerous and so very highly coloured! The pageant of the river bank had marched steadily along, unfolding itself in scene-photos that succeeded each other in stately procession." -- Kenneth Grahame, "The Wind in the Willows"

At La Ferme Sabloneuse, the first strawberries have been picked, three weeks later than normal but they are still just as tasty. Even better, in spite of the frosts, I found that our small orchard has many new apples growing. It appears that the blossoms had been pollinated before the frost and so survived. The fireflies are out now. As I mentioned earlier, the arrival of these "lightning bugs" as we called them when I was a kid means the year has turned from late Spring into early Summer. The first whine of the cicada (locust) hails the imminent arrival of high Summer, but that is yet to come. For now, we are just starting to harvest the first fruits of this year's harvest at La Ferme Sabloneuse and that's always something to write about. -- Gary
