Pigs, are you looking for something that takes off growing and you can't hold weight easy then get a PB Duroc or a F1 cross that has Duroc in it. PB Duroc(s) are too aggressive for my taste. If you want something easy on the land then a red wattle or red wattle cross will be easy on the land and they are more gentle with our son. If you are looking for a pig that has great marbleing in the meat, get Berkshire. If you don't mind a pig getting sunburn then anything white like a land, york or chester. Son's hates to full with sunscreen on his white pigs and you can't let them free range if you are showing them.

We love our Barred Plymouth Rock chickens, they are dual purpose and extermely friendly. If you want colored eggs then those that fall into the easter egger chickens will do for you. But they are late to lay and stop laying before the rest of the chickens. So what we have found out rasing them. If you want a hardy free range chicken then go with Rhode Island Reds. Our son is finding out the hard way that the silver laced waynttode roos aren't the friendlest and will kill in an instance. Java hens can't take our heat index for the State of Louisiana. You could always go with a few of each bred and see which ones you like the best.

Good Luck. If you have any more questions our 4-H has the answers, at least his point of view.
