Your New Alpaca Congratulations!
Ok, so now you have him, don't feed him goat pellets, too high in copper. Mine get their own pellets (alpaca) and I will add haystretcher pellets if the hay isn't very good and also soak a bucket of shredded beet pulp and offer that. They get more alfalfa leaf hay and 2nd cut orchard grass hay when they are skinnies as they eat it better. Cracked corn may get stuck in their teeth and cause lumpy jaw and a tooth infection. Mostly just CHECK HIS FECAL for parasites. You can try Safeguard at 1 cc per 10 lbs syringed into the back of the mouth along the cheek every day for 5 days to help drop the parasite load. It MAY help. But if you get a positive fecal back I could tell you what to treat with and how much if I get the parasite type and the alpacas' weight. You can pull an eyelid down and if the inside skin is white then he probably has the blood sucking gut parasites and may need a different treatment to get rid of them. Good luck with your rescue boy, what did you NAME HIM?
