Too Hot for all the work needed outdoors!
I am busy with updating the 1961 Massey Ferguson Perkin diesel tractor and 1998 Dodge RAM 2500HD Cummins diesel(200,000+ miles) I bought at a farm auction. Our Duroc/Hempshire mix pigs are growing like weeds. The Light Brahma chickens I bought from McMurray this spring are as large as my Rhode Island Red layers (the roosters for meat this fall and the hens as replacement layers. We also incubated some Rhode Island Reds from our layers as replacement layers. Our gardens and field corn are doing well. We try to feed our own produce to reduce feed cost and we do a lot of canning (400 quarts last year). We had a good cherry harvest this year ( 36 quarts were canned for pies ). In May I will be 65, I sure hope I have another ten years of hobby farming before I can not do it any more. I like reading, ham radio, electronics, computer controls and other activities to replace farming when the time comes. I must admit, it will be hard to give up the 10 acre homestead operations. We find them very rewarding (my wife is about 18 months younger, so she will wheel me out on the porch for a little sun LOL).
