I have started the new lift for T3 and cleaning up around shop spraying weeds and mowing . I have helped my friend get his haying equp, back for the second cuttings He got a different tractor to pull the round baller and had to change draw bars and hyd fittings it is a 5X6 bailer and that makes it fast to put up Just spear it and put it on the trailers and take to the barn and unload with skidsteer and stack. Ha P2 got his goats trained yet. They are something else to deal with.

Papa took off some of the weaning bulls that did not make weight for us. 2 loads later & we have unhappy cows on both sides of the place. He cut another field or 2, lets see what the weather looks like now. Ah sunney w/chance of rain. Yelp that's how things roll over here.

The guys got the cut hay bailed and moved. The front insulators on the F-250 were shot and hubby got them replaced. THANKS HUBBY! P2 & I swaped chicken pens yet again and we still have escapies. UGH! Fig are about to be over with and the highway department has let out our road and soon it will be a mess. Worth the hassel if the new asphalt holds up.

I hope P2 is having a good time with the goats. My uncle had a herd of them. It is like having a bunch of half grown pups they would chew up anything they could reach. Do not let them near your equipment or they will tear the wiring out. I have had to remake the lift for the white truck it was to weak and I broke it.I have most of the steel cut to fix it and will try to do this this week I hope. It looks like it is going to rain the first part anyway and it isin the shop. catch you later mike

May the smell of cut hay is heavy in the air. Papa & hubby got a few fields done. We also weighted and gave shots to the weaning claves. Roo & Reggy left for another home. Terry did not come pick up his rooster, so he's still a crowing. P2 got 20 Iowa Blue pullets from Ideal. Man that's a story and I had to drive 3 hrs to pick them up or wait until Saturday & pay postage due (which was stupid). The Trio came back from Denham from getting their horns burnt off. Man V doubled in size from when she left. School starts in 2 weeks for us. P2 isn't ready yet. P2 & I changed chickens around. Thanks to M for the watermelons that were split, the hogs are screaming "YHEA BABY!!" 4 more days until Brawl (P2's PB Hereford Boar) comes to live with us. Now we need to work on getting Gracie.

  Hi there.
4-H has been wonderful for us. We just got our charter started in January, but have been busy with lots of projects. My daughter showed two of her kids this spring but has decided showing is not her thing. I was a little bummed but it will simplify(and keep things cheaper) on our dairy. We are getting my families 200 yr old homestead this fall and are very excited! We want to raise our own organic meat and vegies. If you have any advice on cows that would be great! We would like one dairy girl and two meat steers. Someone suggested jersey/angus cross drop calves. Hope your days are blessed!

He will like the goats . uncle had a herd of them .Just keep them out of your trees and away from your equipment. They will chew on anything they can get to. Trailer wiring plug wires on anything they can get. but their milk is good so is the meat .We cooked it like deer. I am making some side boards for the 3/4 ton with a barn door type of tailgate .Allmost ready to put them on and try them out . Mike

Well it's a good thing I went ahead and purchase that 50# sack of chick starter. Ideal called yesterday & said they can almost fill P2's Iowa Blues pullet order & wanted to know if we still wanted them. So I told the crew at Ideal, go ahead & try to fill the order. So we should get them Friday, so heres to another several mths with chick starter. All righty then!

Update the Trio went to the vet to get their horns taken off. Dr. welch burnt them off. Thank God I did not wait until August like the other vet wanted me to. Want to Thank Papaw/Mamaw for taken them to Dr. Welch for me. Pal was the stuborn one and scratch his burnt horn to the point he was bleeding again. Mamaw coated it with bluecoat and is doing a great job of keeping the fly at bay. Will be getting them back on Friday.

  Doing good
The same thing just happened, I am logged in the message boards, but looked at my blog, hit visit me at the homestead, and then I got to yours and there was no comment box. Will have to remember that =)
Doing great, we moved to a different place in October. I have about 4 acres now which seems to be about right. Although I think I am crazy... I really shouldn't work at a farm supply store and be in charge of chicks during the spring. I over bought chicks... oh well they are fun. Where I work, there is a guy who buys a couple chickens and ducks and then takes them up to the Nursing home for the residents, and then when they get bigger has to rehome them (city won't let the NH keep them) so he sent this years home with me, the two Ameracanias he bought, laid their first eggs yesterday. I love the cycle of life part of farming...

PM showers, check on the Trio since Hubby put their pen under the pecan tree their hay was nice & dry. Maybe we will get another shower like we did yesterday and then I can change their hay out. Still have to watch Pixel like a hawk when the trio is out with the bigger goats. Lady the dog still doesn't know if she should keep then together or apart. But I've came home everyday with her under the trailer keeping a keen eye on them. However she did open my Bramble Berry box and chewed on two of my colorant blocks. Like all my luck she chewed the two colors that I've been waiting on. Oh well my soaps will have to wait another week.

OK, I'm having the most difficult time keepin 1 heat lamp from blowing the bulbs. I understand (underlined here) that we've been getting PM t-storms mixed with power surggies but hay we can work w/both of them. Just rearrange brooder chicks. RIGHT? Yhea explain that when you add newbies to an established peeking order. Down to four pens now. But things look good, for now.

Still on the fence about the pullet looking 3 mth old that has a dappled head. She should be old enough now for me to tell sex. But OMG those pair of legs she got on her make me double guess my thoughs.

  Picture of brooder
In your pictures there is one of a brooder, how many chicks fit in it and how long do you keep them in it? I have a quail brooder now, but there is no safety cage or anything around the bulb, so we went back to the stock tank... but was just wondering how long you keep them in there.

Knee high grass was cut, raked and given to all the animals that wanted it. Stop counting at 15 wheel barrels full. Even the chickens had their fill and just leveled out the piles as the count grew over 8 wheel barrels full. Hogs were ok with the 1st two loads and then after that it stayed in a pile. Got all the roos out of the pen except for 9 that looked like hens. Will keep them a few more weeks before we determine their sex. Another shipment of Ideal chicks and everyone made it.
