bought 30 white pigs large whites and landrace. Want to supply grower with white pigs for abattoir and coloured for small butchers. Am still reducing numbers and increasing sheep with merinos only. but weakened at the knees and bought a fat tail with a lamb at foot for 48 aud and sold lamb at market for 65 aud still on the bottle...... and still have mum. Miss his bleating a bit, but will get past it am sure of that. One bag of milk will go a bit further by doing this. they have to be a week old and on the bottle before they can go to the auction systum.

Got some burning off done and rubbish out of the house ..... did a mix for pigs and came back to do another one and it just poured with rain and it has not stopped all day. Hopefully I shall get a go at it tomorrow...

Been painting the house this week....look so much better

Had a heap of lemons and put them through the juicer today and in to the freezer. also Limes and put them in to small Chinese take away containers and in to the freezer as well.

It is still raining and it is 9.30pm at night. the ground is just so wet.

My seedlings are up in the veggie patch, and will need planting out shortly. The chooks are laying eggs, and I need a chook pen built to increase my varieties. I also want to have some pheasants as well. I used to keep them as a teenager and just love them as a bird. My friend just outside the metro area has peacocks and would love a pair of them but they are territorial and i would have to cut one wing to stop them flying and that my be to their detriment...so need to have them in a cage with a roof til they have their first clutch of eggs. have to think about that one for now. they are such beautiful birds.

bought some steel posts and a coule of bird cages at the auction last week, along with a new letter box. want to give it a paint first before putting it down on the road. also picked up some large tubs for duck water containers. might get a pair when i can get a pen built.

with less pigs on hand I have more time for other things. sheep dong well and so are my calves. They still come to the fence on my call.

Well might as well go off to bed, it is raining so heavy on tin roof.....

Well P2's show crew has changed out. Pixel and Pichu if God willing will deliver safe and healthy babies in July. P2 is growing out a new billy from Mr. Larry named after him. We have purchased him a billy of his own and 2 does. Breeding will be 2 years away. P2 is growing out two gilt for the October fair and will be showing 2 boer does from another farm. Hereford cattle are still munching on the grass. Rain caught us by surprise this AM. Chickens are well, P2 got his NPIP redone for the year. Looking forward to the new show season.

I'm making cold process soap now

between me and the workman pigs have been going to the abattoir about every 3 days. They dont wont pork or bacon from us now. we grow fully outside and they promote shed grown free range which is wrong but the public think it is free....like outside and just accept it. it is a play on words and it might force me out of the industry. I think that is what they are trying to do somehow as I am the last of the growers who grow totally free outside. Not what they want in the market place. Pity. We are free of disease, free of drugs and chemicals and hormones and growth promotants.

since our dramas with fusarium they have placed great pressure on our piggery...basically taken full advantage of the problem. but they will take them till they are all gone then we can only grow to 33 kg live weight and only 20 per week. hardly worth the exercise I reckon. 9 hours round trip to abattoir, only go once a fortnight and put on 40 - 45 on the trailer. Ah well, not 21 anymore and will get some more sheep and see what else we can do. been in the industry 20 years and they have never marketed my pigs free range only sow stall free.. they removed our yards for auction, got rid of the other abattoir and have been slowly getting others like me out and i would imagine I am the only one left growing like this...just what the public want.

I have helped my friend get his haying equp, back for the second cuttings He got a different tractor to pull the round baller and had to change draw bars and hyd fittings it is a 5X6 bailer and that makes it fast to put up Just spear it and put it on the trailers and take to the barn and unload with skidsteer and stack. Ha P2 got his goats trained yet. They are something else to deal with.

I hope P2 is having a good time with the goats. My uncle had a herd of them. It is like having a bunch of half grown pups they would chew up anything they could reach. Do not let them near your equipment or they will tear the wiring out. I have had to remake the lift for the white truck it was to weak and I broke it.I have most of the steel cut to fix it and will try to do this this week I hope. It looks like it is going to rain the first part anyway and it isin the shop. catch you later mike

May the smell of cut hay is heavy in the air. Papa & hubby got a few fields done. We also weighted and gave shots to the weaning claves. Roo & Reggy left for another home. Terry did not come pick up his rooster, so he's still a crowing. P2 got 20 Iowa Blue pullets from Ideal. Man that's a story and I had to drive 3 hrs to pick them up or wait until Saturday & pay postage due (which was stupid). The Trio came back from Denham from getting their horns burnt off. Man V doubled in size from when she left. School starts in 2 weeks for us. P2 isn't ready yet. P2 & I changed chickens around. Thanks to M for the watermelons that were split, the hogs are screaming "YHEA BABY!!" 4 more days until Brawl (P2's PB Hereford Boar) comes to live with us. Now we need to work on getting Gracie.

  Hi there.
4-H has been wonderful for us. We just got our charter started in January, but have been busy with lots of projects. My daughter showed two of her kids this spring but has decided showing is not her thing. I was a little bummed but it will simplify(and keep things cheaper) on our dairy. We are getting my families 200 yr old homestead this fall and are very excited! We want to raise our own organic meat and vegies. If you have any advice on cows that would be great! We would like one dairy girl and two meat steers. Someone suggested jersey/angus cross drop calves. Hope your days are blessed!

Trailer wiring plug wires on anything they can get. but their milk is good so is the meat .We cooked it like deer. I am making some side boards for the 3/4 ton with a barn door type of tailgate .Allmost ready to put them on and try them out . Mike

Ideal called yesterday & said they can almost fill P2's Iowa Blues pullet order & wanted to know if we still wanted them. So I told the crew at Ideal, go ahead & try to fill the order. So we should get them Friday, so heres to another several mths with chick starter. All righty then!

Update the Trio went to the vet to get their horns taken off. Dr. welch burnt them off. Thank God I did not wait until August like the other vet wanted me to. Want to Thank Papaw/Mamaw for taken them to Dr. Welch for me. Pal was the stuborn one and scratch his burnt horn to the point he was bleeding again. Mamaw coated it with bluecoat and is doing a great job of keeping the fly at bay. Will be getting them back on Friday.

The same thing just happened, I am logged in the message boards, but looked at my blog, hit visit me at the homestead, and then I got to yours and there was no comment box. Will have to remember that =)
Doing great, we moved to a different place in October. I have about 4 acres now which seems to be about right. Although I think I am crazy... I really shouldn't work at a farm supply store and be in charge of chicks during the spring. I over bought chicks... oh well they are fun. Where I work, there is a guy who buys a couple chickens and ducks and then takes them up to the Nursing home for the residents, and then when they get bigger has to rehome them (city won't let the NH keep them) so he sent this years home with me, the two Ameracanias he bought, laid their first eggs yesterday. I love the cycle of life part of farming...
