The hawk has taken us down from 8 roos to 5. Lost Fry and Ozzy to the hawk too. I was working all say out in the coop and saw that they come at 1 in the evening. Perfect time for them, because we aren't home one way or the other.

Dropped off the eggs at the fair. P2 put in a dz of his green eggs. An assortment of brown are under my name and the hubby's name got the Barred Plymouth Rock and Production Red eggs. They wanted to put hubby's cream eggs under the white divison. It took me 15 minutes to explain that they could not go under the white until some one came with a white dozen and I asked the lady if I could compair our cream ones with her white ones and she agreed with me that the cream ones need to go in the brown divison.

Looking for a colored chicken that lays white eggs, any suggestions?

Well we have a dead bobcat cub in the road this morning. We've got a mom out there somewhere. Lucky we had no new calves since the first was born and the program that we use said that calf was two weeks early. Maybe the mom bobcat will move on unless she has others. Just have to take a few cautionary steps now until calving season is over with. The good news is that I will be home for a week off of work and with something new going around the house maybe we won't get another calling card from the bobcat family.

Hello you all. Well the light rain set in and P2's game was cancled. We are down to 6 roos now and the keets are doing fine. We found babies in the fish tank and it took a lot of affort to get them scooped up and into the baby tank. Did not even check the filter to see if we have any in there. So far we've counted 12 baby fish. Well P2 has only a week and 2 days and the fair will be here. I have to drop off his eggs on Monday the 19th. It will be here before we know it.

Thinking of you all. Haven't heard from you all and hope everything is okay.

When I went to P2's soccer practice yesterday, he said that they tagged the calf and it was a heifer and he was wrong on the breed. It's a pb Hereford calf from Frosty. We will just have to wait and see if she has horns, because Forsty is not a polled Hereford. Pa-Pa need to get some more "meat" on his cattle so we purchase 1 horned Hereford and 1 polled Hereford for the farm. Bo the Brahma is getting to old and his is throwing high weight calves and if we have a good stand of ryegrass the F1 calves will be even heavier, which means we will have to pull more this calving season. Since Bo is a gentle bull and LOVES his pears it going to be a hard one for Pa-Pa to let him go. But we don't like to see calves over 85 lb. This may be his last season with us. Just got to wait and see.

We will start to hold P2's eggs starting this Monday so we can get him a dz to show at the fair. Will let you all know if and what he gets.

Have a safe weekend.

  Hey you guys.

Have to make you all laugh. Last night while mixing the flock's feed it sounded like it was going to rain. So like a chicken, I went outside to check the weather. It was clear as a bell. Then I heard it again. The keets were on top of the coop roof. They were playing some kind of tag. Then when they saw that I was watching they stopped and one fell off the roof. It's okay. However, it amazes me how well they fly. Even better they can get up so high and then they "forget" how to come down...LOL...But with a little food in the bucket the rest found a way.

I've got to get the flock a couple of pumpkins for them to eat. The pecan tress are loaded and maybe we will have some to share.

First of the week and checking on you all.
Well P2's game went well. They do not keep up with the score but the kids did...lol...P2's team is called the Packers because thier colors are green and yellow. His # is 10. At this game he push the ball through and scored once for his team. He kind of gotten winded at the half mark and he stayed back. But he played his share of the game. I thought it would rain that morning, but it soon cleared up when the umbrella was packed into the vehicle.

P2's female swordtail is going to have babies. Just don't know when and got to keep an eye on them. The orange neons are doing well and the cardnial neons are doing the same. Well let you all know if the rest of the fish eat the babies, if we notice that they have arrived.

P2 got to go and watch "Walking With the Dinos" in Baton Rouge with his cousin this past weekened. We had a mini vacation from the place and enjoyed it for awhile, but I had to get back and check on things.

You know how that goes.

We've been having cool weather in the morning and then back to summer time temps in the evening. The rain set in on Sunday and hopefully there is enough moisture for Pa-Pa to drill rye grass for this winter.

Thinking of you all.

Hey you all. Need you advise once again.

P2 wants to show a dz of his eggs at the parish fair. Have you ever done this? I put a call into the country agent haven't heard back from him. I need to know what color is considered brown. Dovey white sex link is the only one that lays a white egg. So the white egg division is out. Now he has 4 to 5 green layers that could be the right choice. And then there is the brown division. The only one that lays a dark brown egg is Summer 1 (Welsummer) and we have to have a dz here. Now the rest of the egg layers is a light pink to a tan color. If he goes up against true brown egg layers, I think he would be in trouble. But at least he followed through with what he wanted to do.

How do you clean the eggs for a show like this? I just wash them in water and scrub the dirty off.

Did I mention this will be a first for him? LOL

Thanks and thinking of you all.

Well P2 was in a pank this morning. He could not find his keets. So off into the woods we went (P2, myself, La-La the dog and Gre-Gre the cat). We found them 40' (give or take a foot) in a tree sound asleep. P2 through a stick in the tree. It did not get close to them but made a sound and soon we had 7 keets coming down. P2 was just a fusing at them and I think they understood ever word for when he took off to the chicken yard there they were 7 keets in a line following him to the yard gate. I need that laugh.

The owl got one of the roos that came with the keet. Been hearing the coyotes in the distant. They know our fall calving season is just around the corner (just like our parish fair).

Hope you are resting and improving. How's the animals?

Well the lavender keet that ate the string is no longer with us. The string did not kill her, but the owl got her between midnight till this morning around 6:30. We got in late from the soccer practice and eating and decided that for one night Mangus door to the hutch could say open along with the chicken door. Well that provided my thinking to be WRONG. Mangus was okay and loving the outing at 4 in the morning. However when P2 and I stepped outside I noticed that the keets were out. P2 helped me to get a white one back into the yard and then P2 screamed to from the woods that three were in a tree. They saw us flew down and ran to the chicken yard fence. I ran an opened the gate and P2 moved them along the fence to come into the yard. Got them in and it wasn't until I feed up that I noticed that we were a keet short. I checked the coop and the yard and walked around the woods listening and found or heard nothing. I saw bird prints in the wet/muddy soil and by the judge of it...it belonged to the owl and not the hawk. Well at least I did not find it dead due to the string it ate. Leave and Learn.

Checking on you...how are things going...hope you are feeling better after the fight with the flu bug....

I could not find the lavender keet that ate the rope last night when I shut the chicken door to the coop. P2 came in and said that he saw something in the lumber rack. So out in the rain, dark carrying a flashlight and a fish net, I went. Got soaked but found the lavendar keet. They know how to fly over the fence from their yard but they don't know or figured out how to get back over. I caught the poor than and it screamed all the way back to the coop. Once it saw the door to the coop open, it shutted up and out of my hands she went.

I have a question about P2's white keets. One has black hairs on the back of the head and the other one doesn't. The one that doesn't have the black hairs on the back of the neck makes grass nest. Could the one with the black hairs on the back of the head be a male? How do you tell the difference between the gender on theses birds?

Hope you get rest and fill better soon.

  Checking on you....

Took P2 to the spec yesterday. His breathing test numbers are up, however, we had blood work to do. Won't know the test results until Thursday.

Summer 1 has a limp but nothing seems to be broken. Took the time and pulled up all the mushrooms out of their yard. I haven't seen her go over the fence in three days. Maybe she's learned her lesson with those white mushrooms. The lavender keets is up and out of the coop. She doesn't drink or eat much. I've told P2 it's just a matter of time. Haven't seen no passed rope in any of the poop. I still don't know where she found it.

How is your last batch of chicks doing? I bet they are growing like bad weeds...lol...

Our keets must be backwards. They are up and making there rounds at 6 to 7 in the evening. We may lose a lavender keet in the next couple of days. I came home with P2 from soccer practice and one of the lavender keets had this thing hanging from it mouth. P2 to and I cornered it and I put it up. Then we noticed that it was a piece of rope. I walked into the house with the keet and wrapped it with a bath towel and called for Sean. He came into the kitchen and we gently pulled the piece of rope. Then when all of it would not come out we cut it. Before I could get another hold on the shorter piece he swolled it. I don't know where he picked it up and how long he will make it. I brought him back outside and put him with the flock. He was up and eating and drinking with the rest. Just have to wait and see.

I blow out our fan once a week. Have you ever had one to catch on fire or do they just stop working? Over the fall and winter I going to save up the money to purchase a fan with an enclosed motor. How big do you think we need to go? The coop is 8' x 10' with (2) 3'x4' windows one faces the north and the other faces the east. We do have a regualr size door and a chicken door.

Never bought anything from ebay. How do you like it?

Can chickens eat mushrooms? Since we've been having this on and then off again rain the fields are loaded with these white mushrooms. The older chickens leave them alone except for one of the Welsummers.

Going to write down your list of books and see if we can find them around here.

The millet seed will be going on a duck plot. But I thought you had to sew it a few months back. Leave, learn, love and die.

Pressing on here. Hope you all have a safe weekend.

  Red Lights
I guess since we live in such a muffy part of the south. We only us a 100 watt rough service light incase P2 pulls the electric cord and makes it fall down. With the keets I just used a 60 watt light bulb because the store room was already at 99 degrees.

How big are your fans that you use with your chickens? Does it have an enclosed motor? Can you remember the name of the fan? Come next summer I'm going to replace the 20" fan with something bigger and look for an enclosed motor. I think I got my money out of the $25.00 purchase from Ace but I have a feeling it won't make another summer since the motor is not enclosed.

Last night I went and checked on the flock. I went ahead and turned the over head light off. The keets made the most racket, but soon claimed down. They all made it through the day and night. However, I'm leaving the light on today to help dry up the wet pine shaving. Going to turn the shaving over this afternoon. Only 3 out of the bunch and they are roos have gone out side. I don't mind that as long as they are with others. The keets are to busy flying from the top nest to the perches that we've made. I may have to run them all out when I turn the pine shavings over.

Let me know how the red light goes. I bought one but never used a heat lamp unless it winter and I can't keep the room a comfortable 80 degrees.

  Today's the big test.
No one is home and the keets and roos are all still alive. They haven't seen rain so when they went out this weekened they would look up at the sky with the rain coming down and I had to go and chase them back into the coop. I left the overhead light on for them during the day to help with the dampness. They are eaiser to drive with the sticks than the older ones. We've named the littlest of the roos Richard. I don't think he's a RIR. On his wing feathers he has a good amount of white on them and white feathers on his neck. It's realy doesn't matter what he is, when he gets 22 wks old he and the rest of the roos will be moved to the Amite farm.

How do you wean them off the light at night? Now that they are in the coop with the rest, Fry seat at the window seal looking out at night and the rest don't get that much rest either.

My great uncle came over today and he said he should of brought his 22 with him. I thinking he was referring to the hawk. Knowin him that was what he ment.
