Farm Name: Semper Fi Acres

Year Farm Established: 2008

Location: Ash Flat, AR

Years I’ve been farming: 5 years

Animals I raise: As you can see we have the three little pigs...next year we are looking to get some goats, chickens and my husband wants to try and raise some Sheep??? We plan on breeding two of the pigs this Spring, Miss Piggy, the black one and one of the other two...

Crops I grow: this year we only have a small garden. we have cucumbers, squash, melons, radishs, onions, and tomatoes if the deer will leave them alone.

Hobbies I enjoy: I like to read, play on my computer, archery, target shotting,
My husband likes hunting, computers and working on the farm...
the grandkids like sports, animals and reading.

The proudest moment on my farm: the day we bought this farm..it is only 12 acres, however we are raising two grandkids and this will be great from them...they have the freedom here that they did not have in the town we lived in and they will learn so much on a small farm...I was raised on a small farm, and I hope they come away with all the memorys that I have...

Pets: Saddie and Puppy...Dogs
Golden, Speckes, Lovie Dove, Baby Girl, Whitie, Stripes and Little Bit...Inside Cats
Mamma Kitty, Little T, ST, Key Key, LT, Little one, and Special Kitty(has messed up eyes and does not see to well and is only a kitten.). ..Outside Cats..

Farm Motto: your never to old to start a farm...and never to old to care what happens to the animals on that farm...

How Runt's hoof? Came across a paint that people put on horses hooves if they are cracked. You may want to jump of Jeffers or Valley Vet and take a look at it "if" Runt's hoof isn't doing any better.

Well the first of the piglets left on Friday, 3 females and one male...seven males will be leaving this coming Friday...that will leave us 5 females, and we are thinking of raising them and just selling them as meat...but we will see...After Friday I am going to have to put the ones that are still with the mother in with the one left, or put that one in with the mother...it is getting cold at night and I can't leave one piglet alone in a pen...so we will see...both my girls are just about dried up, so I might just move the babies back in the pens with the others...will let you know what I decide later...

Well the piglets will be 8 weeks on Monday...and the ones that are sold will be leaving...and we will sell the rest of them now...like I said I will not let any of them leave until they are at least 8 weeks...we did try to put all the piglets together but that did not work, so we had to go out this morning and try and get them seperated again...we were having to many fights...I don't like that so now we are all muddy from all the rain, and grabbing the piglets to get them back in the old pen...oh well I will try and keep you up dated as we go...

Well update on the piglets, we not only have the 4 gilts sold, but 3 barrows, and 4 more gilts, which means my gilts are gone...that only leaves me 3 barrows...and they still can't go until the first week in Oct...So I keep going out and marking the ones with different colors for each person that is buying them...three different colors...mine I don't have to mark, I know which ones they are, the runt and the one that lost part of her front hoof...they are staying here...so when I get the last 3 barrows sold I will be ready for Oct. so they can go to there new homes...I'm hoping that someone will take the last three together...that would be so much easier...but I will let you know...
Nellie is getting close, within this month I would say, and Sweet Heart is just starting to get her bag, so we are looking at about 2 months with her we are guessing here as no one even knew she was pregnant...but we will wait and see when she is starting to really bag then I will know closer to her due date...

Well we have four gilts sold, but they will not be leaving here until the first week in Oct...the people picked the ones that they want...I marked them so that we can pick the right ones when they come to get them...we are going to keep one gilt, Darling, and one barrow, Runt...so that leaves us 12 to go, 4 gilts and 8 barrows...but as we will not let them go until Oct. thee is no real rush, but we have the posters out so in case someone wants a boar, I will not have that one fixed...so we will see. they have until Aug. 26 to order there boar...otherwise they will be "fixed"...so we will see what happens...I will keep you updated...

Well the piglets are doing great...even Darling is doing good...she is not limping much and can run on it now...my runt is doing better and is slowly getting bigger but is still the smallest piglet I have...he is so cute...I don't know if anyone will want him but if not I will keep him...and the same for Darling...if no one wants her, I will keep her and breed her myself...
The rest of the piglets are doing great...I even have one that follows me around when I am out there...he is funny...and Squeak's piglets like to play tag with me when I am out there...either they tag me or I tag them...either way they run and run...it is fun to be out there playing with them....Piggy doesn't like me playing with hers she is over protective with them which could cause problems when we go to take them out of the pen...but we will see...I am the only one that goes on with her right now...she is still my baby...big but my baby...LOL..

Well so far so good, the fence is holding and we have boards down between the two panels...so that no one can see the others...both mothers have calmed down and are doing great...the piglets will be 2 weeks old tomorrow...and some of them are starting to eat and that is good...we have about 4 weeks to get another pen up for the piglets when we wean them...this had better be a really good pen...LOL...and I need to check on the mothers pens as they will not be happy when we pull the piglets out of there pens...I know I know I will be keeping two of them, one from each...one because I don't think anyone will want her, with the hoof gone and her limp...the other for freezer meat for next year...so they will not be a lone...I will let you know what else happens...LOL

Well farm life is never boring...last night I looked out and here are my two big mothers in one pen, fighting...I yell, my husband and I go running out the door, and it takes us 10 mins to get them where they belong...then we have to deal with the piglets...who's is who's??? it was a good thing that the other day I went in and did a count and small discription of who has who...we had 10 in one pen and 8 in the other...well it should be 9 and 9...so one was not where he belonged...so I had to do a fast count and then grab the one that had to go over the fence...and of course the mothers are still upset so this is not a good idea...so I grab the little one and over the fence he goes...but once he hit the ground he was fine and everyone went to check on there piglets...so then we had to put up a second pig panel and put stuff between them...I think my one snapped at the others piglets through the fence and that was all it took...Piggy came through the fence...and I had to hold that fence up to get her back in her own pen...oh well, I turned to my husband and told him that the birthing pens will be 8 ft apart from now on...LOL...as the next time we will have 4 mothers and that is just not happening again...I was lucky he was home...but the first pen up will be for the piglets when we wean the piglets...then each of my mothers will have to stay in a pen by themselves...oh and while they were fighting, they ended up in the shed, and my runt was in there, so what do I do, I go in after him...I grabbed him and pulled him out of there...I did not want him stepped on..I know not smart, but my husband had the girls are one end and he was at the other so I just went in...LOL...this morning everyone was fine...I put some cardboard between the fence to make it higher so they can't see each other...LOL...oh fun fun fun...LOL..

Just a fast update...the runt is doing good...he is one of the first to get in there to nurse and once he is there, no one moves him...LOL...and my little one with the hoof that is gone, well she is doing good too...she is walking better on it and when she runs, she can keep up with all of them even on three legs...but unless someone wants a pet, she will be staying with me...I will see if we can breed her, and if we can and she is a good mother, then she will have a home here...oh well got to run, it is getting hotter out there and I need to get more ice out to the pigs, yes Ice...they like it, and once it melts the piglets lay were the ice was, it is nice and cool for them...and the ice jugs they like to lay around to keep cooled off in this heat...

Well the piglets are now just over a week and they are doing good...we do have one of Miss Piggy's that got stepped on and lost the hoof nail...BUT...she can walk, with a limp, but that little one can run on three feet as fast as the others...LOL...I am guessing I will be keeping her as I don't think anyone will want her...we will see if we can breed her or not, if not then she will end up in the freezer, but I am hoping that she can be bred as she is so cute...she is a gray/white/black...and white...LOL...but like I said I will more then likely be keeping her as I don't think any one will want her...but that is fine, I like her...LOL...I will let you know what happens, I have already had a couple people asking about when they will be ready to go, I tell them the first week in Oct. as I will not let them go until they are 8 weeks old...I know I could let them go before that, but I like to be safe...oh well need to go check on them...

Well the piglets are not 4 days old and we still have 18...they all seem to be doing alright, and in this heat it is a wonder...we have had 4 days over 100, and the heat index is another story...but we have been putting frozen jugs of water out there durning the really bad parts of the day...and I go out 3 and 4 times a day and give them all cold water...I have even put ice in the mothers water to keep it cooler...and I have one that loves to eat the ice...LOL...we have tarps up in the one pen that had so little shade, and both mothers are doing great...they are eatting and drinking and both seem to be good mothers...the little ones are starting to go out to explore and all 18 know my voice...and they don't run so much when I go in as they are starting to follow me around...Momma number 2...LOL...I will let you know how they are doing...Sweet Heart, one of our sheep, leg that was cut badly is doing great...no sign of infection and we are about 90% sure she is bred...and she is a year old, we all thought she was only about 7 to 9 months...but we were wrong...LOL...but when you get them from someone that does animal resue, they are not always told the truth, and this women that I help at times, is so good with animals...so it looks like we bought two and we will end up with 4 to 5, depending on how many Nellie has...I will keep you posted on this...

Just thought I would add a little more to my earlier blog...the frozen milk jugs are working great...one has one gallon jug in with her, and the piglets are all around it, not touching it, but around it...and the mother has her noise on it...the other one has two gallon jugs...and the piglets are all around it, again not touching it, and that mother has her own gallon jug...LOL...and no one is showing signs of any heat stress today and it is hotter today then it was yesterday...so it is working...I waited until it was really getting bad, they took them out...I will go out when it cools off and bring them back to the freezer as tomorrow is going to be worse yet...I will let you know how it is going...

and not I have two stray dogs around, and I can't have that with Nellie getting so close to lambing...I am not sure what to do, but if they continue to show up, I will first call the police, and if need be, and for anyone that knows me, I will shot it, it if goes after any of my animals...I hate to do that, but I don't have a way around this...there are two of them and I will not have them going after any of my animals...not only is there the sheep, but I have cats and kittens around...oh well... I need to go, have a great one...

Come visit me, Little Piggy Farm & Semper Fi Acres.
