  chicken update
We have 6 hens now! We did have 7, not sure what happened to her - she did a lot of sleeping and one day just fell over dead...was quite sad and our son was very upset - it was one of "his". Rats. The others are all very healthy, no signs of mites or parasites or anything untoward suggesting illness. We were given them from another family that has recently gotten new hens - these are 2 years old, so not laying as much at all. But that's perfect for us! We get one or 2 a day, which is all we need by far! I have NO clue what kind they are - buff orpingtons? Perhaps, that seems to be a rather popular breed up here. The kids like to "tuck them into bed" at night with a snuggle - lovely having hens as pets! We have a Rosie, a Priscilla, a Penny, a Torchek, a Raggedy and a Cecily.
Thanks to all of you who've commented on this page, I'm sorry I don't reply quickly.
We've been busy getting things organized for winter, it could arrive at anytime up here (a couple years ago we got 2 feet of snow on Hallowe'en). The hay is all in the barn, the 6 horses are all getting fed now rather than grazing, to ensure they are nice and healthy before it gets cold. The leaves are turning golds, yellows and oranges and it's another beautiful season up in Northern BC!

Come visit me, Shimmering Hill.

We got our first egg yesterday and feel like proud new parents! haha! It's small; brown with freckles on it. Don't know which hen it came from, it was laying on the floor instead of up in the nest. Silly girls.

I think two of the "hens" are going to be roosters... so that means 3 roosters, uh ohhh.. So I guess that means our population will go down slightly.
Haven't named any of them, I just call them "The girls" and "Mister"... Ha.

Come visit me, RailRidge.

I love associated naming, it's so fun (sometimes a little complicated when it gets a ways down the line! ha.)
I'm thinking hubby got carried away with getting 12 chickens; your 4 sounds a lot more reasonable to me.... guess we'll be doing a lot of omlets and egg sammiches this fall! :)

Come visit me, RailRidge.
