Gardens are slumbering
Gardening is totally over for this year. All plants have been frozen by the sub freezing temperatures. Twice the temps have dropped into the teens which has killed even the most hardy plants.Come visit me, Nebraska Dave's Garden.

I haven't been to Terra Nova for some time because winter finally made it to my area. The ground now is frozen which leaves working the soil out of the question. I can only continue to cut up the downed tree. I've discovered from neighbor's comments that the tree is a Mulberry tree and not a cottowood. I have the tree sectioned up but will need to farther cut the sections into chunks to be able move them better.
I have been researching a method of gardening called Hugelkultr. It's a German method of burying chunks of wood under about a foot of dirt and making a raised bed over the wood. It's supposed to increase the water retention of the soil and keep watering needs at a minimum.Come visit me, Nebraska Dave's Garden.

I have worked at the new property, Terra Nova Gardens the last three days. I cut down the cottonwood tree that would have fallen on the gardens at some time in the future. After cutting down the tree I found that the core of the tree was hollow. I'm glad I decided to cut down the tree. The last couple days have been spent cutting up the tree and cleaning up the debris.
******** It seems that the issue with the property is not going to not enough water but too much water. There are several soft spots in the garden area that have kept the soil sticky and greasy. I had to dig a couple feet down in the soil to remove one of the tree branches and the black soil never hit the clay sub soil. ******** It looks to be a good purchase for gardening.Come visit me, Nebraska Dave's Garden.

Today marks the beginning of the year 2012. It will be a glorious year. Being the proud owner of new land, I'm going to be extremely busy from now on. I definitely need to finish the food storage area now.

I finished up with the garden work yesterday. The last three garden beds were turned and covered with old straw for the winter. Next spring more compost and soil will cover the straw and a fresh cover of straw will be added.Come visit me, Nebraska Dave's Garden.

Georgia is having the anual pumpkin stew this afternoon. Hopefully, I can get some grocery shopping done afterward.
Temperatures are routinely in the 20s at night and sometimes reach 60 during the day. All gardening for me is now over. I still have some Mesclun salad mix growing but it won't be long before that will be gone as well.
I have purchased seeds from Burpee's seed catalog for this winter's project of growing salad under a grow light in the basement. I not sure how that's going to work but it will be a great experiment.Come visit me, Nebraska Dave's Garden.

Not much going on today. I had intentions of raking the front yard but the leaves are falling so fast it would be fruit less to try and do so in the wind.

Wednesday
I finished up the foundation for the backyard patio yesterday. The first level of retaining wall blocks are set in place but will need to be glued in place with construction adhesive. Each level will be glued together with the adhesive because of the small blocks. It's a little more work but necessary to keep the integrity of the wall in place. Things should go a little faster now that the foundation is completed. Once I get the first layer of retaining wall blocks set in place the rest of the wall should go together really fast. ********
Today is a volunteer day. Georgia needs trees trimmed. The neighbor volunteered his pole saw to help trim the trees. That's huge. I will still take my ladder and saw but hopefully I won't need them.Come visit me, Nebraska Dave's Garden.

No school today so the day will be spent being day care for the grandson. Maybe I can get a block or two set in the foundation of the backyard patio. I still have hopes of finishing that project before the cold weather sets in or good. There's plenty to do. The tomatoes are finishe so they can be removed from the garden bed and the watering system can be dismantled and put away for the winter. No school today so the grandson and I will be hanging out for the day. The laundry has been piling up so maybe a load or two of that will be on the list of things to accomplish for the day. ******** The temperature was 40 degrees this morning so I would say that those dog days of summer are truly over for this year and we are definitely into the fall weather. The garden continues to puzzle me. The lettuce planted looks nothing like the lettuce that I'm used to seeing. The broccoli is pretty puny and only a couple spouts of carrots are up. I'm back from the northern Nevada fishing trip. We cut the trip one day short due to catching too many fish. We had two real good days. The limit was five so we ate the small fish and starting keeping only over 20 inch fish. The trout were nice and fat this year so even will only five fish the catch was well over five pounds of fish.Come visit me, Nebraska Dave's Garden.

Monday - Took a friend shopping all day. Bradley has learned how to ride his bike fairly well with training wheels. Maybe next spring he will be on two wheels.

Yesterday, I checked the garden. The lettuce is just starting to poke up through the ground. No signs of broccoli or carrots yet.

Yesterday marked the beginning of football for the Nebraska college football team. That's one of the most important days in Nebraska. Many people are so emotionally attached to the outcome of the football games that it will effect how there week is after the game. As for me, not so much. I like to watch the game but it's still just a game. Yesterday I watched the game at a friend's house because I didn't have the more expensive tier which has the channel to watch big ten football.
The plumbing work will begin again on Monday or Tuesday which ever is convenient. Monday is a holiday but I don't have anything planned.Come visit me, Nebraska Dave's Garden.

Yesterday was a note worthy day. I actually aquired the paper work to place a bid on a piece of foreclosed property to expand my gardens. I will have the paperwork filled out and turned in by next Friday. It's pretty much a sure thing that the bid will be accepted as the previous owner hasn't paid the taxes for 11 years and has a lien of $1500 on the property for city weed removal. The property now hasn't seen weed removal for years. There are vines, weeds, fallen trees, and scrub brush trees covering the entire property. It will be quite a challenge to clean up the property to allow gardens there. As soon as the bid is excepted I'll start the cleanup as it will take almost three months to actually get the deed free and clear. The city will clear all the back taxes and liens, so when I get the deed it will be free and clear. The taxes for this property will be $11 a year. I certainly think I can afford that. At the end of day two it's the faucet repair - 2 Old Dave - 0. Ah, the joys of working on 45 year old plumbing. The new faucet was great and installed just fine but just a little drip started from the stopper in the sink. Well, OK, a dribble. So no problem a new stopper came with the new faucet. Yeah, however, removing the old stopper was not possible and well, I broke the sink trying all different methods trying to remove the rusted solid plumbing under the sink. As you can clearly see that 45 years ago all the plumbing was metal which corrodes and rusts together magnificently. Another issue is the pipe that goes into the wall. After decades of close contact the two became one. Now the rusted pipe has to be chiseled out of the galvanized pipe. Oh, boy, I'm looking forward to that. Come visit me, Nebraska Dave's Garden.

The wrestling match between the old bathroom faucet and me ened with faucet 1 Old Dave 0. Of course it teased me with the deception that I was winning by making it just hard enough to test my demolition skills. After wrangling rusty faucet lock nuts and finally using a sawsall to remove the old faucet, the false perception was that fight was going in my favor. Alas after the battle raged for two hours and a feeling accomplishment came over me, the final test with water on showed the error of my thinking. Water pressure on and sink faucet off, all was good. Hot water on, all is still good. Cold water on, spray on the wall and water dripping on the floor. Cold water off. Spraying and dripping quit. Hmmmm, defective faucet. ******** Home improvement store here I come .... again. Come visit me, Nebraska Dave's Garden.
