Eight new Bourbon Red poults....and these have done really well. We started them off with Karo syrup in their water and it seems to get them off to a good start. Our new Royal Palms are recovering from Fowl Pox that we unknowlingly brought onto the farm when we bought them from a farmer in Sanford. Thanks to the help of our Poultry agent we have survived the ordeal and now have a trio of Royal Palms that have developed immunity to the disease. They were not really sick, just looked awful and scared us to death.

  Hot...hot....hot!
The weather in NC has been unbearably hot the last two weeks. Our animals have really suffered. We have put new fans in the barn for the llamas and alpaca. The donkeys don't seem to mind the heat. The ducks cool off in the pond....but the turkeys....well they just stand around and pant! Please, Lord, send some cooler weather.

Come visit me, Tyfton Acres.

  Wow!
You have runners and mini-donkeys! I sooo want to get into them too, but we bought a fixer upper, and we're still in renovate the barns mode. Next year, we hope to delve into getting some runner ducks and donkeys. Do you have a pond for your ducks, or do you just use a kiddie pool? Also, do you farrier your own donkeys? Do the different breeds of ducks interact or get along? Sorry for all of the questions... but you're where I want to be someday, too neat!

It has been a really sad day here at Tyfton Acres. I rushed putting my new Indian Runners into the pen on the outside yesterday because they were too crowded in the brooder box. Two drowned last night in the water tub and it was not over their heads. If they had just stood up, they could not have drowned. Then this afternoon, for no apparent reason and with no warning, one of the five Royal Palm turkey poults that I bought the husband for Father's Day just fell over dead. He was perfectly ok an hour before when I cleaned the box. ....I guess some days are just better than others!

  Ducklings
Our new Holderread ducklings arrived last week. They are growing soooo fast. We have four gray Runners from S and S Poultry in Chocowinity, N.C. that we picked up the week after Easter and five hatched from the dozen eggs that we also bought that week. We now are the proud owners of a flock of 21 Runners that are all off of Holderread stock. These ducklings are already great at catching bugs and spend the night under their heat lamp snapping up the many bugs that flock to the light. Our feed bill has been cut to the bone. Now if we could just teach the goats and llamas to catch bugs....we might be able to make this farm game profitable!

Holderread ducklings, Runners, due to be shipped this week. We have four gray Runners from S and S Poultry that we picked up the week after Easter....also, a dozen eggs in the incubator. Have waited almost two years to add the grays to our Runner flock. Can't wait til the mallard colors come out in the drakes. Holderread no longer hatches the grays so we are proud to help keep this color viable through our flock.

Beautiful day today! Cleaned out the Angora goats' pen and messed around with the animals for some time. Just love these springlike winter days. Our Muscovies and the turkeys are laying. The grass seed came yesterday. Can't wait to get started on the pasture. We plan to build a raised bed for our broccoli and squash this spring.

Thanks for visiting! My younger goats especially love the llamas. During the winter if two of the llamas are lying next to each other the goats will squeeze in between the llamas to keep warm. What do you use your llamas for?

It is sooooo COLD tonight here in North Carolina! We thought that we would never complain about cold weather if it ever got here after the terrible heat the animals had to endure last summer.....but here we are in complaining mode again. It would be so nice to have some moderate weather for a change. Where did spring and fall go? We only have summer and winter now.

Loved the pictures of your llamas. We had to buy a new llama this summer. We lost one of our beloved llamas to the extreme heat. My son did have a good show with both llamas at the county fair.
