FFA SAE (supervised agricultural experience)

Farm Name: FFA SAE (supervised agricultural experience)

Year Farm Established: 2008

Location: Alden, IA

Years I’ve been farming: 7 years

Animals I raise: Boer goats, laying chickens, and meat chickens.

Crops I grow: Well, a vegetable and herb garden...

Hobbies I enjoy: I love showing my critters at the county fair!

Club/Associations memberships: FFA!

Pets: Cats, a dog, two fish, and, really, the goats act like pets!

Farm Motto: In FFA (for those who don't know), members are required to have an SAE, where they basically run their own farm-related small business (if you do an entrepreneurshi- p one, at least--there are other types, but I didn't do them, so my page isn't about them.

My kids are both still in 4H and were FFA members in high school. I've alway said my kids learned more life skills in those two organizations than they did in school. This year will be the 15th year they've shown sheep and the 4th for hogs. Always glad to see someone else involved in the same programs.

Come visit me, Elmcrest Acres.

When i was in 4-H I used to show sheep. I have been concerned about the decline of the numbers in 4-H and FFA in our area. How is it doing in yours?

Come visit me, Camp Kathy.

My goats had little goats! Two of my three goats kidded today. One had twin girls, the other had twin boys! They're so sweet!

Comment about the picture: the goats in this picture are very far apart in age. Mine, on the right, was born the Feb. before that July, while the other two were born in September, so don't think mine is a midget! She was just a lot younger than all of the other does at the fair, so they stuck her in with older ones that she just couldn't compare to. (By the way, anyone else annoyed by sheep people coming in and bracing goats? Several people do that at my fair, even though it is officially discouraged. I personally don't actually brace, nor is anyone in this photo. I just sometimes stick my leg in front if the goat is trying to bolt out to the front, just for some control. That's what's happening here.)
