We are purchasing our new chicks this weekend! Had to make room in the barn for them. We just bought a small green house, can't wait to put it up!! Should be ready for fall/winter.

Welcome to hobby farms! About mixed flocks, I haven't had different ages mixed before, as I've only gotten chicks once so far (I'm getting new ones this spring, though). However, they were different, similar-sized breeds, and there was no problem because of being different types. My cousin, though, has about 20 chickens, and every one of them is a different type of chicken! She has everything from quail antwerps (itty bitty) to buff cochins (really big!) She doesn't normally have problems, but sometimes she has to watch to make sure that one of her itty-bitty shy ones gets enough to eat and doesn't get picked on too much. However, she has several small ones, and there's only one that ever has any problem,

All of our chickens are Golden Comets - same breed. We are looking to add more in the next week or so. Our 8 year old son is interested in starting his own flock! Does it work okay as mixed? Do they have to be similar size breeds?

Thanks.

Love the photo! Are all your chickens the same breed? Our flock is mixed and we are looking to add in the next couple of days.

Good luck.

Come visit me, The Homestead.
