Well it all over (harvest), this year was just okay nothing spectacular about quantity, but it will do! Had big Deer problems and predators after the chickens. My Labrador went blind last year and my hound finally died after 15 years, leading to all my animal problems.

  Australian Cattle Dogs
I have to tell you this is probably the smartest, easiest dog to train I have ever had, and we've had collies. She is very sweet and gentle with us but very protective of us as well. She has a very vicious bark and snarl at anyone who comes to the house until she realizes that we are okay with them then she calms right down. She really has that herding instinct, even around the alpacas. They say they need two hours of vigorous exersize every day. That is true. They are very active, high energy dogs. They need either the physical activity or the mental stimulation of learning new things, which they pick up very quickly. They do not like to be bored or left alone for long periods. If you have children that like to play outside, this dog would be perfect, because they are also very protective and extremely loyal. They do like to chase small animals so I don't know how they would be around the chickens. But I think that it would be easy to train to not chase chickens.

  relaxation time
Well its DEER season no luck so far. all the animals are in the freezer all the vegetables are canned or froze. All the new layers are laying well. And the rooster is doing his part.Next Year is just around the corner and im already planning out the garden and the livestock. I'm adding goats at some point next season, i think it'll be a breeding dairy set and a few (boer) meat.Lots of planning, building and fencing. The goats will be used for lot clearing. And hopefully the dairy will take the strain off of high Milk prices.YumYum, if not i'll bet the pigs will appreciate it.

  chickens and turkeys together?
I have been told that chickens and turkeys must be seperated because of disease vectors. What is your experience? Do your chcikens and turkeys have any contact? We originally wanted both, but worried about the warnings. We settled for meat chickens and layers. The light Bramhas we have for the first time this year have grown huge, so meat birds, yes. We will see how they do as layers. Next year our layers will be a mix of Bramas and Rhode Island Reds. It sure is interesting how we try new things every year, isn't it?

We have Bourban Red turkeys that we bought locally and they have been exciting to watch grow up. We bought a male and famale and ended up with two hens when our tom turned into a hen. We did have to invest more to get a tom because by then the girls were pretty old and we wanted the tom to mature out at the same time as the hens. We have really enjoyed this heritage breed.

  Thanks for the visit!
So true about the soil bit. Hubby and I have learned alot in the past year. I really wish I could own a few chickens but I figure that I'll just have to leave to the future.
That along with bee keeping and owning possibly a goat!
