The proudest moment on my farm: When I built my chicken coop all by myself and when my hens started laying eggs!

Hi! The peas seem to be pretty hardy & take the winter well. We had a couple of weeks of pretty cold weather this last winter so we did put a heat lamp in the coop for them but they still choose to spend quite a bit of time outdoors. Our pen is built on the back of our garage so they are blocked from the north wind, the coop faces south. They have a plywood coop & an outdoor run that is partially covered with transparent corrugated plastic panels. I think as long as they can get out of the wind & rain/snow, they will do well. I will try to add some photos soon.

Well Spring time is right around the corner!! I picked up 15 new layer chicks and am planning on expanding my coop when the weather is cooperative. I have lots to do this spring and can't wait to start! Yesterday was the first nice warm day (60 degrees!) and all of my chickens took advantage to get in a great dust bath and bathe in the sun.

A week ago we had a big snow storm and received two feet of snow. We also lost our power for three days. Bad news for new born chicks. Fortunately I saved them all by using a Camelbak bladder and filling it up with warm water every two hours. I was surely lacking in the sleep department after that, but was happy they all made it through.

So I just found out that my "monster" egg from one of my brown egg layers was a TRIPLE yoker! Wow! I gave that special egg to one of my biggest believers in my wishes to create my own hobby farm.

I just added some pictures to my site. They are pictures from the start of my chicken journey to where I am now. I bought ten chicks in May and still have all ten. One of them did turn into my beautiful rooster, but hey thats ok! I am continually upgrading my chicken coop and making it better. I have winterized it since that beginning picture of the coop and added a winter door and insulation. I have been getting 6-9 eggs every day! I have a light that is on a timer to turn on in their coop for a couple of hours at night and in the morning. They really seem to like that!
