DO you know what kind of chickens you want?
Some good, hardy layers we have had are Brahmas (we have several of these and they are very friendly too), Auracanas or Americanas(lay greenish colored eggs), Plymoth or Barred Rocks, Orpingtons, Wyandottes, and Sexlinks (this breed is a good multi-purpose bird).
Also, make sure you buy healthy chicks. They should have clear eyes, no goop coming from their nose or bottom, and should be active - all chicks fall asleep often and quickly, but they should run away when you put your hand by them.
