The Island of Misfit Toys from MADELIA, MN
The Island of Misfit Toys

Farm Name: The Island of Misfit Toys

Year Farm Established: 2012

Location: Madelia, MN

Years I’ve been farming: 3 years

Animals I raise: Currently we just have 18 chickens and 2 guineas. But the list is every growing.

Crops I grow: We have a large personal garden where we grow everything from wild asparagus to tomatoes, carrots and peppers to pumpkins, gourds and watermelon. And everything in between.

Hobbies I enjoy: I am a free lance artist and is attend MSU for a BFA. So I try to get my hands into anything artistic from ceramics to painting and photography. Hobby farming is actually a really new thing for us(both being city folk originally). But I couldn't imagine life without it now.
Also Fishing, hiking, hunting, kayaking... well basically anything thing with the outdoors or nature involved.

The proudest moment on my farm: When we started free ranging the chickens and I woke up to Emerald the rooster on our front porch crowing away with the rest of the flock foraging in the yard.Just than I knew this was the life for me!

Pets: Three dogs, Honey and Nala and Wednesday(our roommates dog). Our indoor cat Heathen, and our outdoor cat Chess. The Gecko named Gecko and a 75 gallon fresh water fish tank with Houdini the clawed frog.

Farm Motto: At the Island of Misfit Toys everyone has a place, a job even if it is just to scare the FedEx guy away. :-)

We started with six guineas. Down to two now because of an owl. That's the down side of pastured livestock.

Welcom! We moved from the city to a 60 acre farm 9 years ago, and we haven't looked back yet! Have no worries - those few chickens will soon grow into a large flock, and will have plenty of brothers and sisters of other breeds before you know it. I have to almost physically restrain myself from buying all kinds of farm animals. Right now, we have chickens, cows (including one Jersey for milking) and are shopping for a breeding pair of pigs. I'm having to force myself to stay away from sheep and Angora goats for my spinning habit! Good luck with your farm.

Welcome, how old is your flock? Our son has (34) week old chicks in his brooder and a flock that's marching on 2 years old.
