Quick update before I take the kids to school. We have moved to the homestead. I've got my old 8n ford tractor going and this past weekend planted the garden. My four pigs are doing good. All the chickens are loving it out here. And Millie has adapted great. She has made her a nest of sorts in some old hay in the barn and is sleeping in there instead of the back yard. She's going to be a good farm dog.

Here's a update. We will start moving in on the 17th. In the mean time, I've finished the chicken coop and have moved my two hens and about 30 baby chicks to it. I went to San Angelo and bought two saanan Nubian cross does that are now in my back yard ( bottle babies), Sunday I picked up sugar the horse. And this next wed I'll go pick up my 4 weaner pigs.

Well I bit the bullet this morning and bought one boar doe kid and two billies. Paid what I thought was a good price for the three. Also finally got some days off and was able to get started on converting a stud pen to my chicken coop.

Let me rephrase the coop size. The actual coop is a 10x12 with a run of 12x42 connected to it. So they should have a little over 4 sq ft inside and 18 sq ft outside per bird, plus they will be let out to free range in the evenings when I'm not working nights.

I ordered 25 baby chicks that should arrive the week of feb 18. I ordered 15 red sex link pullets, 5 buttercup pullets, 2 cuckoo maran pullets, and 2 bb red modern game cockerels. These will be joining my two production red hens prob some time this summer after they are bigger.
I went out to the new place and took some measurements today. I'm going to convert one of the pens next to the barn to my chicken coop, the coop will measure 12x52. I figure my chickens are going to have plenty of room in that. If my math is right they should have over 22 sq ft per bird. I can't hardly wait for the lease to expire so we can get moved.

Finally closed on our new place last thurs. the previous owners leased it back from us on the same night for 6 weeks while their new home is finished. That's ok though I'm working so much overtime (20 12 hours days in a row) that I really wouldn't be much help moving right now anyway. I'm ready for warmer weather and days off so we can move and start enjoying our new place.

Went ahead and moved some of our Christmas stuff to the barn at the new place over the weekend. Luckily we're friends with the current owners and they are more than ok with it. I just couldn't bring myself to put that stuff back up in my garage just to be getting it back down and moving it here in the next couple of weeks.

Well we were supposed to close on our place on the 3rd. Now it's been pushed back to next week because they forgot to order a termite inspection. This is getting so frustrating for us and the sellers. They are waiting for us to close on this place so they can close on their new place. I'm just ready to be done already. I did start getting seed catalogs in the mail so I've been planning and circling.

Man, I'm ready to get closed in our place. Saw an 18 month old jersey heifer on craigslist that is a little over 2 months breed that I would buy in a heart beat. Maybe they will still have her after we close.

Good luck with the aquaponics system. 55 gallon drums are a good and cost effective route to go with. I suggest pea gravel or expanded shale for a growing medium if you can find it! Let me know how it goes.

Thanks KB, we are set to close on this place jan 3. This waiting is driving me nuts. I'm ready to get moved and settled in, and get started on my chicken coop before the feed stores get spring chicks for sale.

If you get ducks with your order, don't feed medicated chick starter it kill the ducks. You need to use a flock starter.

Good luck with your order.

Ah yes, my two illegal chickens, right now we live in town and won't be moving until after the first of the year. This last spring my family and I were at tsc and the had 4 red sex links left and I bought them. My oldest daughters dog killed two when they were about 3 months. (Don't have that dog anymore) so we are down to two. But we aren't supposed to have any type of fowl inside the city limits. Thing that gets me is that two houses down they have 3 large dogs that bark all hours, they never clean up after the dogs so with the right wind the smell is awful. My chickens are quiet, and no smells. My other nieghbor is a justice of the peace here, but they love my chickens and collect eggs and check feed and water when we are out of town. I also give them eggs anytime we have extras.

I'd rather have the space than the round pen, I'll keep it for awhile though and let my daughters learn to ride in there taking it down is low on my priority list. I'll prob use some type of portable round pen in the future if I need one, currently it is fenced so I can seperate animals if it is needed. Thanks for everyone's tips and advice.

  Good Morning
Why do you want to take down the round pen? Mine has come in handy so many times. Makes for a good dry lot if you have a sick animal and a place to train more horses if you decide to start doing that again. There is always a need for a good trainer.
Your place looks and sounds wonderful

Thanks for the welcome. Yep, snow in texas. We usually get 2-3 snows a year. This picture is from last winter though, we are friends with the current owners.
I'm planning on Berkshire for the homestead hog. I'm planning on getting a gilt and AI'ing her each year and keeping a pig or two to feed out and selling the rest. We already have two illegal hens in our backyard. And part of the deal on buying the property was that they would leave a horse, they said they had two sisters that were gentle but were not good prospects for them (rodeo family) that they would leave for my girls. It has pipe fence around the property, 100' round pen (which I plan on removing ) 40x70 8 stall barn with tack room, 8x50 horse stalls, and a 24x30 hay barn which will pull double duty as my travel trailer cover, and a 2000 sq ft house.

  My new farm
We are closing on our small 3 acre farm with house in January. It has 10 unimproved acres next to it that I hope to buy in the near future. Right now we are going to focus on getting moved and getting our current home rented out, with the rent prices in our area the rent income should just about cover both mortgages. I've raised show hogs and lambs in FFA in high school and broke horses for my grandad also. We are so excited to be moving outside of town and into the country.
