  We love Farmer's Markets
One of the things we've done since 2008, has been attend local Farmer's markets. The first one was very informal, had anywhere from 10-20 vendors and charged "backyard" low prices.

Then, Cedar City (through the Utah State Extension Service - Iron County), started a mid-week late afternoon Farmer's Market in downtown Cedar City. That was in 2011. We had a great time there, too. In 2012, we moved to a more visible location. Traffic was down a little, but we finished strong.

This past summer, we also began to support a Saturday Farmer's Market at the local IFA store (the largest in the whole co-op). We've since become major sponsors of that market.

Even in the dead of winter when all we have to sell are our eggs, we go to the Year Round Farmer's Market at the IFA store, just to talk with the customers, and share our farm story.

There's nothing in the world like having the laptop showing pictures of our farm (from the beginning), to being able to present new programs for the summer season, to polling the customers about new ideas, to sampling potential value-added products.

It's really great for the kids, too, as we have time to share with them and answer their questions.

Try it! You'll love it!

  Kidding and Lambing Season
It's way early, nights still down near zero, but we're kidding and lambing. So far, 4 kids from 2 does, and a little ram-lamb born last night to a Finn sheep we bought last fall.

She's a first-timer, and if she's any indication of that breed, I want more! We sat with her for about 1 1/2 hours. She went from early labor, to hard labor in just a few minutes, and with only a small whimper.

We caught the little guy and laid him on a towel in front of her. It was as if she'd read the "How to have babies" book, one look, the light went on, and she began cleaning him up.

This morning he's already running around the sheep pen and meeting his "aunties". Our ram could care less about him, which is a good thing, since the gate to his pen is frozen in about 8 inches of manure, straw, sand and ice.

We should have about a week's break before we go all out with kids from 4 more goats (quads from at least one) and 16 more sheep to lamb.

Fun times on the farm, for sure!
