Spent today planting newspaper. Lol. Should work as a natural weed barrier and help keep the ground moist through the day. Also discovered where we carved pumpkins next to the deck last year the seeds got scattered. I now have at least 20 pumpkin plants coming up so have to see how those go. Come visit me, H&F Farm.

mulch mulch mulch Got another truck load of mulch today to spread over the banking at the front of my planting area to stop erosion. Good stuff. Heavier and bigger chunks of wood in it than the regular store bought stuff and a lot cheaper. .6 of a ton for 6 dollars. Oh well get it spread out and then back to digging lol.Come visit me, H&F Farm.

Storms and snow has cleared so tommorow will be back at it. Hopefully the pile will be dried out enough for a bit more burning and more digging to be done. Fun Fun Fun Come visit me, H&F Farm.

Damp Day Spent part of the day removing more turf from what will be the primary veg plot this year. Also been hunting around the web and found a place that I can get used wooden pallets from. Going to get 7 of those to build a compost heap out of. Also while hunting found a place that is giving away used wooden boxes and shipping crates. Going to find out how big those are. If they are decent size going to get a few of them to make into planters and cold frames.Come visit me, H&F Farm.

Well couldnt get the pile to burn today so attacked all the high stuff with an axe and got it all cut down. Hopefully a taste of gas tomorrow will allow me to scrub burn the stuff left. Then I have to get some quarter inch screen to riddle out the roots and stones out of the soil in the pile. Busy Busy Busy Come visit me, H&F Farm.

Busy day Well things had dried out enough after the storms to do a slow burn today. As you can see from the photo I got a good chunk of the pile incinerated but god the junk thats in there is insane. Found what looks like the bottom of a recliner and what looks like the remains of an old computer chair today. Only good thing is that mound apart from the roots and bits of trees appears to be good soil. Last thing I did today was open a test patch of what will be my primary planting ground to see what the ground under there was like. Was hoping for maybe a layer of soil that I could use but nope. All clay and rock less than half an inch down. Its bad when you wish you had a backhoe to dig your garden lol. Oh well mattock and shovel for me. Hopefully have the area dug down and prepared for planting over the course of the next few weeks.Come visit me, H&F Farm.

Burn Time almost Hoping the wind will die away today so I can begin the burn on the overgrown pile. With the little digging I have done into the pile there is a lot of good soil in there and also a lot of trash. Found about 30 aluminium cans so far and a couple of old car tyres. Oh well can sell those all to the recycling center and make a bit for buying seedsCome visit me, H&F Farm.

Breaking Ground Well time to start breaking ground on my first small holding in the USA. The fun part will be the soil. Its heavy clay cur through with tons of rock. So plan is to dig down about a foot to a foot and a half and remove the soil replacing it with top soil and compost to build the new planting beds. Also have to burn and clear a mound of soil and aparantly builders waste that has been overgrown to give me the full area to work in. Hopefully that mound contains the topsoil thats missing from the area.Come visit me, H&F Farm.
