My adventure in backyard chicken raising....
My first brood in 2010 was 6 chicks, 3 EE and 3 Red Star from mypetchicken.com. 2 of the EEers were so noisy I gave them away a month or two after they started laying because it just did not stop. 1 of them was so sweet and quiet. Never had trouble with her but she died last summer. Anyway, I bought 6 local chicks because I was down to 3. I was hoping they'd be quiet but nope, they were even worse! My Red Stars were the quietest chickens I've had so far, but I gave 1 away because she hollered when the EEer died. AfterI gave her away 1 of the remaining 2 Reds starting hollering every time the last red was on the nest. It got annoying and city limits is a bad place for them to holler like they are dying. I really don't want neighbors complaining because it's a $650 fine if the police show up. So I gave the other 2 reds to the same ladies who I gave the first red to so now all 3 sisters are happy in a new place and apparently make no noise ever. They give me a dozen eggs now and then.

Anyway, in the new ones I had 2 australorps and 4 golden buffs (supposedly the same as Red Stars but I think parentage was different). One of the Aussies ruled over the whole flock and she started laying and man did she holler and holler and holler. She had 3 of the goldens hollering and I was so annoyed on the 3rd day of it, I gave all 6 and the coop away. By afternoon I was regretting my rashness and my mom fussed at me and told me to get bantams. However I read that bantams are loud as regular size. I guess we'll find out! I ordered 15 bantams and got 16 from Cackle Hatchery a week ago. 9 EEer and 7 RIR babies.

A cat got into my garage because stupid me opened the door and forgot to put the wire lid on them. She got 2 (1 yellow EEer and 1 RIR) out of my 16 and so I thought I better get a few more just in case! Ordered 7 more bantams today from Meyer Hatchery. I didn't want to buy another 15 so went with Meyer that allows lower minimums plus wanted well-rounded colors. I didn't want them too far in age from the others but I won't be in town next week to pick them up so had to make it 3 weeks between them instead of 2. Silly post person won't actually deliver them at 8am like most post people do. Oh well! I'll really have a good mix of colors this time.

I guess having 21 total will be fine until we weed out roosters. And this way if I have to give away super noisy females I won't have to start all over again because if I end up with about 8-10 quiet females I'll be happy.

If cops show up, I guess I'll point them to the other 3 houses also running chickens in their yards in our neighborhood. And I'll point them to the noisy dogs that come out of the doggy door every day and bark all day at every noise including trying to break down the fence to get to me. Why city ordinance won't allow less noisy chickens is beyond me!

So that's my adventure in chicken raising in the city limits.
