Garden Grows Green in Raised Beds

Hobby Farms editor Sarah Coleman grows her garden in raised beds in suburban Lexington, Ky.

June 4, 2008, 5 a.m. EST

How does your garden grow?
In the heart of suburban Lexington, Ky., pretty well, from the looks of it!

Raised beds bring forth bounty

Using raised beds, healthy soil and a green thumb, Sarah Coleman planted her beans, peas and carrots (top); tomatoes and peppers (middle), and lettuce, broccoli, garlic and onions (bottom). She found them the other day revealing bold bounty after they drank up an early June, central Kentucky rainfall.

Tomatoes love these raised beds

Coleman, who is Hobby Farms managing editor and Hobby Farm Home and Popular Farming Series associate editor, used instructions from Kelly Wood's How Do I ... Build Raised Beds and insight from Jessica Walliser's How to ... Mix Your Own Soil to establish her gardens. She says she wished she trellised her peas!

Salad time--raised gardens bring forth bounty

Looks like salad time!

I am going to build raised beds this year. I think it'll be easier to secure them from critters. Thanks for this article.
