Basset Hound Breed Profile

History of Basset Hounds:  The Basset Hound directly descends from the Bloodhound line and was developed in France, where it worked as a trail dog.

Conformation:  The Basset Hound has a hard, smooth and short coat that comes in any combination of black, tan and white. It stands 14 inches in height at the shoulder and weighs 40 to 60 pounds. The breed, whose name is French for “low-set,” is known for its short legs and long ears.

Special Consideration/Notes on Basset Hounds:  The Basset Hound dog breed’s life expectancy is 8 to 12 years. Be sure to check its eyes and ears regularly for signs of infection. Excess weight can place a burden on its legs and spine, so closely monitor its weight gain.
