History of Rex Rabbits: The Rex rabbit breed was developed in France in 1919 from a mutation found in a litter of wild rabbits. The mutation had no prominent guard hair, giving the rabbit a softer, denser coat. Courtesy Bowtie, Inc./ Isabelle Francais
Conformation: The Rex rabbit breed is a meaty rabbit with extremely dense, velvety fur. This distinct feel comes from its short guard hairs that are nearly the same length as its undercoat, about 1/2 inch long. The Rex rabbit breed’s size ranges from 7½ to 10½ pounds. The recognized color varieties are amber, black, black otter, blue, broken group, Californian, castor, chinchilla, chocolate, lilac, lynx, opal, red, sable, seal and white.
Special Consideration/Notes on Rex Rabbits: The Rex rabbit breed is known to have a docile temperament. Its life expectancy is 5 to 8 years.
