By now, most of us hobby farmers have planted the proverbial tree (or orchard or garden full of vegetables, etc.) in honor of earth day--or just because we want to.

According to an article from National Geographic, groups of citizens, conservationists and public officials are organizing behind campaigns known as "new urbanism," "sustainable cities" or "smart growth."
