Honey Health Benefits

Could honey offer more health benefits to humans? Scientists meet to examine other possible findings.

Could honey have the potential to offer more health benefits such as antiseptic and antibaterial benefits--or even aid more serious conditions--for humans?

According to the Committee for the Promotion of Honey and Human Health it could.

A group of scientists meeting at international symposium in Sacramento, Calif., plan to discuss some of the possible benefits, including:

  • its potential to improve chemotherapy-induced neutropenia
  • wound healing
  • restorative sleep
  • cough suppression
  • cognitive function

The Committee, a non-profit group that organized the symposium, hopes the discussion also will help stimulate further research that could advance the role for honey in other health issues like weight management or even risk reduction for neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer 's disease and Parkinsonism. I'm reading a book called "The Hive" by Bee Wilson, and she delves into some of the many historical uses of honey. I recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the long-standing connection between people and honey bees!
