Hobby Farm News - Pilot Insurance Programs Offer Help for Livestock Producers
Eligible farmers can purchase insurance protection for loss of forage, rangeland and pasture.

Do I qualify?
To qualify, you must first live in an eligible region.

The pilot programs are available in select counties in Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, South Carolina and Pennsylvania for the 2007 crop year.

If you believe you may be eligible, you should work with your crop insurance agent. You'll review the map and index grids, assign acreage to one or more grids based on the location and use of the acreage that is to be insured.

If loss of forage, pasture or rangeland for your livestock is a concern of yours, you may be able to receive assistance through the USDA Risk Management Agency.

You may apply for the pilot program through November 30.

The agency is offering two new pilot Group Risk Protection risk management programs for pasture, rangeland and forage based on:

  • Long-term changes in greenness of vegetation and
  • How much precipitation is received relative to the long-term average.
