When I returned from vacation, my shasta daisies, among other perennials, needed trimmed.
After retuning from vacation, it’s always a challenge to get the garden in order. Because we were gone for nearly three weeks, there‘s quite a lot to do out there. I have spent the last week with pruning shears and harvest basket in hand.
My perennials were in desperate need of a haircut, so I spent a few hours trimming back the yarrow, shasta daisies, black eyed Susans, fennel, lavender, catmint and coreopsis. They look better (though shorter) now. I know they’ll produce another flush of blooms in a few weeks and I’m looking forward to it. I also spent some time deadheading my butterfly bushes, which, mind you, is a big chore when the plants are 6 feet tall!
In the vegetable garden, I’ve been enjoying harvesting lots of tomatoes and far too many green and yellow wax beans. I need to get them in the freezer soon. The peppers haven’t produced a single fruit. When we were gone it was hotter than 90 degrees F every day, and peppers abort their flowers when the temps hit such heights for such an extended period of time. It has cooled down a bit the last few days (only reaching 83 today), and so I suspect the peppers will start forming any day now. I’m looking forward to that, too.
Soon enough the cucumbers will be cranking it out, and I’ll be in the kitchen making pickles. Yet another thing to look forward too!
