Crocheted Napkin Rings for Summer Picnics

Even though the weather hasn’t exactly been idyllic where I am lately, I find my thoughts can’t help to turn to summery days and doing sunny-day things, like picnics and barbecues.

Even though the weather hasn’t exactly been idyllic where I am lately, I find my thoughts can’t help to turn to summery days and doing sunny-day things, like picnics and barbecues. Barbecues are especially popular with my family, and we try to fit them in often. They can be a messy business, though—all those marinades, salad dressings and sweet, juicy corn cobs mean we’re often left with sticky fingers. Paper napkins are fine of course, but one slight breeze and off they go, so I decided proper napkins would be more practical for outside eating.

Because it’s a break from the normal routine, it’s nice to make a little bit of an event out of eating outdoors, so I thought some pretty rings to keep those napkins in place would be a sweet touch. They don’t take long to make and they are a great way to use up any leftover scraps from other projects.

What You’ll Need:

  • approximately 20 yeards of worsted weight yarn per ring (I used Cascade 220.)
  • small amounts of a lighter yarn (4-ply or leftover sock yarn would work well.)
  • E (3.5mm) hook
  • B or C (2.5mm) hook
  • scissors
  • yarn Needle

Using the worsted yarn and the E hook, make a chain of 28, and without twisting the chain, make a slip stitch into the first chain to form a loop.

Chain one and make a single crochet into the same chain. Then make one single crochet into each of the chains around the loop. Make a slip stitch into the first single crochet to complete the round.

Chain one and make a single crochet into the same stitch. Then make one single crochet into each stitch around the loop again, ending with a slip stitch into the first single crochet.

Repeat this step 3 twice, then cut the yarn and weave in the ends. That completes the napkin ring.

Using the lighter yarn and the B or C hook, make chain two. We’re going to make the next set of stitches all into the first chain, to form a tiny circle.

Step 6

Make five single crochets into the first chain, then make a slip stitch into the first single crochet to close the round. Cut the yarn and attach a new color in the same place.

Step 7

Chain two and then make two double crochets into the same place. Then chain two again and make a slip stitch into the same place. This makes one petal.

Make a slip stitch into the next single crochet, and then follow the instruction above to make another petal. Repeat this process for each single crochet around the loop. To finish, make a slip stitch into the first single crochet, cut the yarn and leave the ends for now.

Next, we’ll make some leaves. Grab another color and make a chain of seven.

Skip the chain next to the hook, and then work the following stitches along the rest of the six chains: one single crochet, one half double crochet, two double crochets, one half double crochet, one single crochet. Break the yarn and leave the ends for now.

This is what you should have so far. To finish the ring, use the yarn ends on the flower and leaves to sew them into place. Weave any leftover ends into the inside of the napkin ring, out of sight.
