Commuters in the Bay Area in Northern California had to sit longer in traffic when a chicken made its way onto the Fastrak Lanes of the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza this morning.
KCBS Traffic reported the sighting first, just before 6 a.m.:
Bay Bridge: metering lights on and look out for a CHICKEN running around in the Fastrak lanes near the toll plaza. http://t.co/YHiEZJZcMA

Roughly half an hour later, more chickens were spotted, CBS reports.
At 9:20 a.m., traffic was still jammed in the area; Caltrans announced it was safer to let the chicken run around the lanes than it was for anyone to get out of their cars to try to catch it. California Highway Patrol (CHP) eventually caught the chicken, but not before posting this tweet:
Please DO NOT try and grab the chickens on the freeway. Let #CHP find out why the chickens crossed the road, it’s not worth getting hit!

So, now that the chicken is safe, we have to ask: Why did it cross the road? Share your thoughts in the comments.
