The City of Long Beach, Calif., recently became the largest city in the state to reward its residents for their recycling efforts. Through the city’s new partnership with Recyclebank, local business and brands throughout the city are offering discounts and deals to green-minded residents.

“Recycling in Long Beach is now even more rewarding with Recyclebank,” Mayor Bob Foster says. “Our partnership with Recyclebank will boost recycling rates in the city and help keep our beautiful community green for generations to come, while at the same time stimulating the local economy and delivering real value to residents of Long Beach.”

To receive the rewards, residents must register through the Recyclebank website. As an added incentive, those who register for an account before October 15, 2012 will be entered to win an Apple iPad giveaway. Registration is free.

Here’s how the rewards program works: Each time a neighborhood’s recycling is collected, the weight of the collected material is converted to Recyclebank points, and its members automatically receive points for their recycling efforts. Residents can also earn bonus points by reporting recycling efforts on the program’s website or through iPhone and Android mobile apps.

Points earned from recycling can be used to “shop” at Recyclebank.com for rewards. Local reward partners include the Aquarium of the Pacific and many others listed on the Recyclebank website. Additionally, Recyclebank has hundreds of national reward partners, including Ziploc®, Coca-Cola®, Macy’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Olive Garden and more.

“At Recyclebank, we’ve seen firsthand the incredible, collective impact of individual actions, and we are thrilled to partner with the City of Long Beach to reward its residents for making greener decisions every day,” says Lucie Poulicakos, Recyclebank regional vice president. “By incentivizing green actions, we are hopeful that we can encourage more residents to be eco-conscious, while at the same time stimulating the local economy and delivering real value to families through rewards from Recyclebank.”
