How to Train Young Stock Dogs

Start out your next farmhand out on the right foot with these tips for training a young stock dog.

Farm dogs are great to have the farm to help manage livestock, but not just any farm dog will be able to get the job done. By starting training on a stock dog as a pup, you’ll be able to nurture a relationship with your new farmhand that can last for years. In the video below, stock dog trainer Debbie Bailey will tell you what you need to think about when training your young stock dog.

could have used more specifics, how to train for specific commands/jobs, tools for training, such as whistles, shock collars?, specialty harnesses, I have 2 dogs, 1 herding & 1 guardian, both are pups(5 1/2 mo. & 9 mo. respectively) I am looking for specifics

I agree with some of the others, she could have told us how to train a dog without the older dogs and also some training aids that might be used to teach stay, lay down, etc.

Emily and Maril, you both raise good points. There is so much we can cover when it comes to herding dogs. We'll keep these ideas in mind for future content.
